"Can you make it pop?"
If you've said this phrase to me, don't take offence to the following blog post. It just has to be said.
Sure, if we are talking about a kernel of popcorn, yes I can make it pop. If we are talking about your logo design, brochure, flyer, website, facebook page, etc. then no, sorry, you will have to be a bit more specific about what (in your opinion) makes something pop. I'm not sure why this became the go-to word for requesting additional emphasis on a specific design element but 'pop' in my experience has a wide variety of meanings.
Bold? drop shadow? bright colour? stark contrast? larger? more white space? heavier fonts? or (if you're really extreme about your pop-level)... all of the above?
The word 'pop' just needs to be erased from peoples describing words for design. I know it's not your fault, and if you've said this phrase to me just take this as some constructive feedback.
